How to Save a Relationship After a Breakup

Get Your Ex Back | How to Save a Relationship | Relationship Issues | Relationship TroublesSome breakups are for the best, but frequently, relationship troubles can be overcome. If you're desperate to get your ex back and resolve the relationship issues that led to your split, read on for advice on how to save a relationship from the breakup graveyard.

How to Save a Relationship DON'Ts

The truth is, many couples can patch things up and get through the relationship troubles that sent them their separate ways, but inappropriate behavior after the breakup often dooms their attempts at reconciliation.

When trying to get your ex back, don't:

1. Send numerous, harassing emails - If you feel the urge to put fingers to keyboard, you can do so, but don't hit send. Twenty emails about how you can't go on without your ex - and you want to get past your relationship issues - will be a turn-off and will not successfully save your relationship. Oftentimes after a break-up, it is cathartic to journal. Try writing a letter or email to your ex about your feelings and relationship issues and either tear it up, delete it, or share it with a friend or counselor instead of sending it.

2. Continuously call, text message, or contact via online social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) - Just as with numerous emails, contacting your ex via phone or through various online networks will only add to your relationship troubles and make you look desperate. Put down the phone, and step away from the computer.

3. Sniff out information from their friends - Your breakup and relationship troubles are between you and your ex. Trying to pry information out of your ex's friends or discuss your relationship issues with them will do you no favors. Their allegiances lie with your ex, and he/she will surely hear about it.

4. Participate in destructive behavior - Binge drinking, shopping sprees, and other destructive behaviors might feel good in the moment, but will not help your relationship issues or your self-esteem, and can make you look out of control in your ex's eyes.

How to Save a Relationship DO's

There are many productive action steps that will help you get your ex back, while keeping your dignity intact and helping you work through your relationship issues.

When trying to get your ex back, do:

1. Give them (and you) space - It is tempting to try to force yourself back into your ex's life after a painful breakup, especially when you are feeling desperate to immediately resolve your relationship troubles and get back to the way things were. However, take a step back and breathe. Letting the air clear for awhile can help save a relationship from a place of honesty, and not from a place of desperation.

2. Have adult conversations - When you have had time to reasonably assess the relationship troubles that led to your breakup, it is okay to ask your ex for a conversation to discuss how you can resolve your relationship issues. Remember, this is a one-email or one-phone call endeavor. Wait for them to respond.

3. Evaluate the positive and negative - Take stock of your relationship - both the positive aspects and your relationship troubles. This will not only help you assess whether the pros outweigh the cons, but this will also help you get your thoughts together before having a conversation with your ex.

4. Consider counseling - Breakups are hard. A trained relationship coach can help you get through the bumps in the road, while you try to get your ex back or pick up the pieces of an irreconcilable relationship. If your ex is open to getting help to work on your relationship troubles together, so much the better.

Get Your Ex Back by Empowering Yourself

Last but not least, you need to go into this pursuit believing that you are worthy of reconciliation. If you don't like yourself, why should anyone else? Yes, you've had relationship issues, but you need to believe that your ex is lucky to have you. Relationship experts have long touted the importance of self-confidence as being near the top of the list of what makes people attractive. If you have issues with low self-esteem, a Life Coach can help you regain your self-confidence while you're trying to get your ex back.
